They were very, very, lucky.  If at all possible it is always best to stay with the boat, if it is floating, or near where it went down.  Debris floats loose, there may be slicks, all which are far more visible than you in the water.  There may be things you can use as flotation, such as a cooler.  In addition staying together as a group also increases your chance of early rescue.  Statistics show that those who try to swim for it almost always drown.
