US EPA Updates Recreational Water Quality Criteria

Yesterday, the EPA recommended new recreational water quality criteria that will help protect peoples' health during visits to beaches and other waters. The last time the EPA issued recommendations for recreational waters was in 1986 so updating these criteria are crucial in the continued protection of the public who partake in water-related activities like swimming, boating, and beach combing ...

The following article does not only affect Pennsylvania.  It affects all US States and territories and all boaters, fisherman, and anyone who uses our aquatic resources.  It will reduce funding to all of the state and territorial boating safety programs, and fish and wildlife.  It will also reduce funds the US Coast Guard budgets for Boating Safety programs.  All of us need to tell our representatives and senators to not allow sequestration of the Aquatic Resources and the Boating Safety trust Funds. These are not funds from income taxes. The money comes from a tax you and I pay on fishing gear, boating gear, and fuel for our boats. We pay these trusting that they will be spent on boating and fishing.

SARNIA, ONTARIO The Canadian Coast Guard reminds boaters on the Great Lakes, Georgian Bay and the St. Lawrence River that seasonal Search and Rescue Stations are closed during winter. Rescue boats cannot be operated in ice-infested waters, nor is navigation safe under the prevailing conditions.

A kayaker who made his way back to shore after his vessel capsized on a loch died the following day. The 26-year-old was boating on Loch Fyne with another man when the 15ft kayak overturned between 4pm and 5pm on Saturday.

Two brothers from Juneau died in a boating accident Friday near Tenakee Springs. Alaska State Troopers Spokeswoman Megan Peters says 26-year-old Casey Newman and 23-year-old Kelly Newman went missing when their 18-foot Lund skiff capsized late Friday. Peters says Jim Brown, Jr., in his mid-20s, was also on the boat and was able to swim to shore.
