Search ends for boy swept to sea as parents killed in attempt to rescue family dog in Calif
Mon, 26 Nov, 2012 10:00 AM PST
EUREKA, Calif. - The Coast Guard has ended a search for a teenager whose parents were killed when the three family members tried to rescue their dog from powerful surf in Northern California.
This is a very tragic accident, but it is also one that didn't have to happen. In my 34 years with the USCG I have seen numerous cases that are very similar. Almost always the pet survives with no assistance whatsoever while the rescuers die. Do not go in after a pet in the water. Call for assistance. Let the professionals do the rescue if it is needed. Dogs especially seem to have an innate ability to survive these types of incidents. Recently a dog swept to sea by the Tsunami in Japan was rescued after 3 weeks.
