Boating Safety And Accident News

Preparing your boat for spring boating? One of the most critical and important systems on your boat is the fuel system.  Check all the fittings and hoses. Any doubt, throw it out, and replace it.  Hoses should not have any cracks or checks and no splits on the ends.  Fuel hose should be USCG Type A-15 hose. This is fire resistant and alcohol resistant.  If your hose is more than 5 years old replace it with new hose.  New hose meets the new EPA requirements. Old hose doesn't.  Check all hose clamps. They should be 316L Stainless Steel, at least 1/2 inch wide. Hoses should be double clamped.  The only hose not required to be double clamped is the vent hose but if you have the room on the fitting double clamp this hose too.

Check the fuel tank for leaks and tight fittings and gaskets. Check the tank fuel gage to make sure it is working and relatively accurate.  Have your local marine service provider pressure test the tank and the whole fuel system. This will ensure there are no leaks.  It should be pressure tested annually.

Remember, a fire or explosion can ruin your whole day.  Check out that fuel system.

Boating Safety And Accident News

Spring is here. It's time to get the boat ready. Don't forget to check all the onboard safety equipment, especially the lifejackets. Get them out. Check to make sure there are no rips or tears. They should be dry and without midew or rot.  Pull on the straps to make sure they are still well connected to the jacket. Adjust them to fit the people who will normally be going with you.  If you go out with the same people all the time, have the people try them on and put their name on it so they get the same one every time. Attach a whistle and a strobe light. If they have pockets get some of those small pen type flares and put them in the pockets along with a good sharp folding knife. Make sure everything is attached with a strong nylon lanyard.

Boating Safety and Accident News

One of the more common mishaps boaters have is running out of fuel. This can result in a huge cost for a tow and if it happens when you are transiting an inlet, in rough water, or bad weather is setting in, it can be fatal.

Always follow the 1/3 rule
1/3 of fuel to go out
1/3 to get back
1/3 in reserve for emergencies or adverse conditions.

Learn how much fuel your boat uses at various speeds.  Make yourself a chart showing fuel consumption at various speeds/rpms.  This will help you calculate how much fuel you need to go out and get back.
