This still exists as a very real danger both afloat and ashore. Be careful with portable generators and heaters. Do not use portable generators inside a building or garage. Use heaters only in a well ventilated space. Buy and install a carbon monoxide detector. Every home, boat or work place should have them. Even something as common as a fireplace can cause carbon monoxide if it is not getting a proper draft. (see article below)
