Boating Safety Life Jackets, Vests, PFDs

We all know we are supposed to have lifejackets in our boat. But what else should you know about them? Lifejackets are variously reffered to as life vests, Personal flotation Devices (PFD) and flotation vests. it doesn't matter what you call them. When used properly they will save your life.

1. Have enough for everyone on board. If this means buying a couple of extra ones for that occasional trip with friends, do it. Get them in bright colors! They are much easier to see if you are in the water. It is very difficult to see a person in the water from 500 feet up in a moving helicopter or from another boat a few hundred yards away. Make it easy. Buy brightly colored PFDs

2. Have a throwable pfd, such as a seat cushion, life ring, or buoy. Attach a line to it so you can pull it back in. Use polypropylene line, the kind used for skiing. It floats and comes in nice bright colors that are easy to see.

3. Make sure the PFD fits the person it is intended for. You don't want an adult PFD on a child. It will just slip off. So when you buy them try them on. After you get them home, try them on again and adjust the straps to give an exact fit. Then put the person's name on them. Put the boat name on it too.

4. Don't store them in some inaccessible locker. Ideally they should be worn, but otherwise they should be where you can reach out and grab it and put it on. Defintiely do not store them in plastic bags or in the locker under the forward bunk.

5. In most states now, children under 13 must wear a PFD except on boats with cabins when the child is below decks. PFDs must be worn when operating a Personal Watercraft. That includes adults!

6. If you don't have yours on, at the very first sign of trouble, put it on. Later may be too late.

7. Take good care of them. Take them out and check them for rips, tears, mold, mildew, etc. Pull on the straps to see if they are still firmly attached. Practice putting them on. Clean them if they need it. If they get to the point where they are not serviceable, throw them away and buy new ones.

8. A good demonstration of why you should wear your PFD is, go into a swimming pool and while treading water, try to put on your PFD. It isn't easy!

9. Buy a whistle and some chem lights. Attach the whistle and chem light to each PFD. If you do serious offshore sailing or boating think about getting a personal locator beacon for each pfd.

10. Last but not least there are 5 different types of pfds, choose then ones best suited for your use. http://boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/pfdbasics.htm If you do white water kayaking or canoeing, you need a lifejacket designed for that. If you are mostly sailing, you may need a lifejacket designed to included a safety harness, and designed not to snag on lines and rigging. There are also PFDs designed specially for Personal Watercraft.

Never, ever, put a child who cannot swim in a type three PFD. Type three PFDs will turn a person face down. If the person is unconcious or hypothermic, they will drown in a type III pfd. Get children a type II or type I pfd designed to turn them face up.
